Symantec 2010 State of the Data Center Study: Mid-Sized Enterprises
Emerge as Data Center Vanguards
Data Center Complexity, Numerous Applications, and Disaster Recovery Plan Issues are Top Concerns
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – January 11, 2010 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today released the findings of
its 2010 State of the Data Center study. Now in its third year, the study found that mid-sized enterprises (2,000 to
9,999 employees) are more likely to adopt cutting-edge technologies such as cloud computing, deduplication,
replication, storage virtualization, and continuous data protection than small or large enterprises to reduce IT
costs and manage increasing complexity. Further, mid-sized enterprise data centers show more activity, with more
IT managers predicting major changes to the data center and new applications in 2010. Mid-sized enterprises
also place a higher importance on staffing and training than their small or large enterprise counterparts. The study
is based on surveys of 1,780 data center managers in 26 countries in November 2009.
“Although mid-sized enterprises tend to evaluate and adopt new technologies at a faster rate than larger
organizations, they still face similar data center complexities that are compounded by adopting new initiatives,”
said Deepak Mohan, senior vice president, Information Management Group at Symantec. “Standardizing on cross-
platform solutions that can manage new technologies and automate processes will drive immediate cost reduction
and make their jobs easier in the long run.”
Study Highlights:
Mid-sized enterprises are more aggressive and pioneering than either small or large enterprises. They are adopting
new technology initiatives such as cloud computing, replication, and deduplication at 11-17 percent higher rates than
small or large enterprises.
Top data center concerns include increased complexity and too many applications. Most enterprises have 10 or more
data center initiatives rated as somewhat or absolutely important and 50 percent expect “significant” changes to their
data centers in 2010. Half of all enterprises say applications are growing somewhat/quickly and half are finding it difficult
and costly to meet service level agreements (SLAs). One-third of all enterprises say staff productivity is hampered by too
many applications. Adding to the complexity is the continued increase in data causing 71 percent of organizations to
consider data reduction technologies such as deduplication.
Security, backup and recovery, and continuous data protection are the most important initiatives in 2010, ahead of
virtualization. Eighty-three percent of enterprises rated security somewhat or absolutely important. Seventy-nine percent
said backup and recovery is somewhat/absolutely important and 76 percent rated continuous data protection as one
of their top initiatives.
Staffing and budgets remain tight with half of all enterprises reporting they are somewhat/extremely understaffed.
Finding budget and qualified applicants are the biggest recruiting issues. Seventy-six percent of enterprises have the
same or more job requisitions open this year.
There continues to be room for improvement in disaster recovery. One-third of disaster recovery plans are
undocumented or need work and important IT components, such as cloud computing, remote office and virtual
servers are often not included. Compounding the issue, almost one-third of enterprises haven’t re-evaluated their
disaster recovery plan in the last 12 months.
Virtual machine protection continues to be a focus for enterprises, with 82 percent of enterprises considering
virtual-machine technologies in 2010. Respondents cited granular recovery within virtual machine images as the
biggest challenge in virtual machine data protection.
Recommendations:
Software that supports heterogeneous environments and eliminates islands of information is particularly important
for mid-sized enterprises that are aggressively adopting new technologies because they can reduce complexity in
the data center.
Organizations should deploy deduplication closer to the information source to eliminate redundant data and reduce
storage and network costs.
Data center administrators need to manage storage across heterogeneous server and storage environments in a
way that enables them to stop buying storage by leveraging new technology adoption such as storage resource
management, thin provisioning, deduplication, storage virtualization and continuous data protection and recovery.
Organizations leveraging a holistic approach to storage management can control storage budget growth and often
postpone storage purchases.
Disaster recovery testing is invaluable, but can significantly impact business. Enterprises should seek to improve
the success of testing by evaluating and implementing testing methods which are non-disruptive.
Organizations should deploy a single, unified platform for physical and virtual machine protection to simplify
information management.

Study Finds U.S. Small Businesses Lack Cybersecurity Awareness and Policies
National Cyber Security Awareness Month Survey of Small Businesses Shows Discrepancies Between Needs
and Actions When it Comes to Security Policies
WASHINGTON, DC, October 27, 2009 – Small business owners’ cybersecurity policies and actions are not
adequate enough to ensure the safety of their employees, intellectual property and customer data, according to
the 2009 National Small Business Cybersecurity Study. The study, co-sponsored by the National Cyber Security
Alliance (NCSA) and Symantec [Nasdaq: SYMC], as part of this year’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month,
surveyed nearly 1,500 small business owners across the United States about their cybersecurity awareness policies
and practices.
The survey confirmed that small businesses today are handling valuable information – 65 percent store customer
data, 43 percent store financial records, 33 percent store credit card information, and 20 percent have intellectual
property and other sensitive corporate content online. 65 percent of the business survey claimed that the Internet
was critical to their businesses success yet they are doing very little to ensure that their employees and systems
are not victims of a data breach.
The survey shows discrepancies between needs and actions regarding security policies and employee education
on security best practices. Only 28 percent of U.S. small businesses have formal Internet security policies and just
35 percent provide ANY training to employees about Internet safety and security. At the same time, 86 percent of
these firms do not have anyone solely focused on information technology (IT) security. For those small businesses
that do provide cybersecurity training, 63 percent provide less than 5 hours per year.
The lack of focus on cybersecurity awareness and education on the part of U.S. small businesses can lead to
the loss of vital customer and company data. The study found that while more than 9 in 10 small businesses said
they believe they are safe from malware and viruses based on the security practices they have in place, only 53
percent of firms check their computers on a weekly basis to ensure that anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls and
operating systems are up-to-date and 11 percent never check them.
“The 20 million small businesses in the U.S. are a critical part of the nation’s economy. While small business
owners may understandably be focused on growing their business and the bottom line, it is imperative to
understand that a cybersecurity incident can be disruptive and expensive.,” said NCSA Executive Director Michael
Kaiser. “To the millions of very savvy entrepreneurs across our nation, our message is simple - being smart about
the online safety of your employees, business and customers is a critical part of doing business. Cybersecurity is not
a nice to have for American businesses, it is critical to their survival.”
Meanwhile, small businesses seem out of sync with some Internet security risks. 75 percent of small businesses
said that they use the Internet to communicate with customers yet only 6 percent fear the loss of customer data
and only 42 percent believe that their customers are concerned about the IT security of their business. What’s
more, 56 percent of small businesses believe cybersecurity is the cost of doing business while 21 percent believe
it is just “a nice thing to have.”
Laptops, PDAs and wireless networks are great conveniences to businesses, yet they carry with them an added
responsibility to ensure the data is secure. Today, more than 66 percent of employees take computers or PDAs
containing sensitive information off-site. Wireless networks are gateways for hackers and cyber criminals and
must be secured by complex passwords. Unsecured wireless networks are akin to leaving the front door of a filing
cabinet wide open on the sidewalk. 62 percent of the companies surveyed have a wireless network but 25 percent
of them do not password protect their wireless networks. This is a significant security risk as hackers can steal
information being passed through these open networks.
“Security threats are becoming more complex and employees of small businesses are increasingly the target of
attacks that expose their organizations to data loss,” said Sheri Atwood, vice president, global solutions and
programs, Symantec. “Security awareness and education, combined with a comprehensive security solution, can
empower small businesses and their employees to protect themselves and their information.”
For more information on how you can keep you and your business safe online visit www.staysafeonline.org. For
additional results from the Zogby study, visit: http://staysafeonline.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=67
The demographic makeup of the small business polled focused on number of employees and revenue. 56 percent
of those polled were companies with one-to-nine employees, 10 percent had 10-25 employees, five percent had
26-50 employees and five percent had more than 51 employees. In terms of revenue, 56 percent had annual
revenue of $249,000 or less, 11 percent have revenue of $250,000-$499,000, eight percent have revenue of
$500,000 to $1 million. 11 percent have revenue between $1 million and $5 million and five percent have revenues
exceeding $5 million. The Zogby International poll has a margin of error is +/- 2.6 percentage points.

Symantec Protects Information from Accidental Loss and Unauthorized Access
CUPERTINO, Calif. – Jan. 15, 2009 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Symantec Endpoint
Encryption 7.0, providing advanced encryption for desktops, laptops and removable storage devices. Symantec
Endpoint Encryption offers a scalable security solution that prevents unauthorized access to endpoints by
delivering strong encryption and access control technologies. Encryption and authentication are both transparent
to the end-user, performed with minimal performance impact and delivered through a central management console,
enabling central deployment and management of encryption to endpoints.
Customers are provided extended client support so more endpoints can be centrally managed. Symantec
Endpoint Encryption now includes support for clients not managed by Active Directory. The new version includes
Novell eDirectory client support as well as full management capabilities for non-domain clients. Furthermore,
Symantec Endpoint Encryption obscures and protects access to disk encryption keys in memory (DRAM),
dramatically increasing protection against cold boot attacks (an attacker with physical access to a computer is
able to retrieve encryption keys after using a cold reboot to restart the machine).
In order to improve ease-of-use for the IT administrator, Symantec Endpoint Encryption offers enhanced disk
ecovery tools to make it easier for the administrator to access a machine and set usage rights to further protect
confidential information.
Encryption of removable media has also been enhanced. Symantec Endpoint Encryption features support for
more secure data portability options, including user-created self-extracting file archives. User certificates can also
be leveraged to control access to encrypted data within a specific group of users.
According to the Symantec Internet Security Threat Report, theft or loss of computer or other data-storage
medium was the cause of the most data breaches that could lead to identity theft, accounting for 57 percent of
the total.
“The number one way companies are losing confidential information is through theft or loss of laptops and storage
devices,” said Steve Morton, vice president, product management, Symantec. “As a growing array of endpoint
devices are granted access to corporate resources, the need to properly ensure endpoint security and encryption
on each of these endpoints is more prevalent than ever as these technologies will help businesses mitigate the
Increasing risk of information loss.”
Symantec Endpoint Encryption includes audit report generation capabilities to help answer regulatory requirements
for proving encryption and avoiding obligatory disclosure by offering full audit trails, thereby enforcing mandatory,
company-wide security policies and mitigating risks of data loss. Symantec Endpoint Encryption 7.0 has FIPS 140-2
certification.
Customers are offered both full disk and removable storage encryption capabilities. Symantec Endpoint Encryption
is designed to protect all data on the hard drive of a Microsoft Windows-based machine. It allows administrators to
encrypt the laptop’s hard drive to ensure safe harbor and, more importantly, to prevent the exposure of sensitive
data should the laptop be lost or stolen.
Symantec Endpoint Encryption also enables businesses of all sizes to maximize the productivity benefits of using
removable storage devices while minimizing the risks these devices pose to data security. It is designed to protect
all data on USB, FireWire, Compact Flash, iPod and other storage devices and media.
Licensing and Availability
To better suit individual customer needs, Symantec Endpoint Encryption is available in three formats – Symantec
Endpoint Encryption (includes both Full Disk and Removable Storage Editions), Symantec Endpoint Encryption –
Full Disk Edition and Symantec Endpoint Encryption – Removable Storage Edition.

Symantec’s 2008 State of the Data Center Report Reveals Managers
Pressured to “Do More with Less”
Struggling with adequate staffing, data center managers worldwide are compelled to deliver better service levels
to meet increasing demands while reducing costs
CUPERTINO, Calif. – Jan. 12, 2009 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today released the findings of its 2008
State of the Data Center report. The second annual study found that data center managers are caught between
two conflicting goals – more demanding user expectations and higher levels of performance, yet reducing costs
remain the primary objective for the data center. The report also found that data center staffing remains problematic,
servers and storage continue to be underutilized and disaster recovery plans are out of date. Finally, the
respondents indicated that while they are pursuing green data center initiatives, they are doing so primarily based
on cost benefits.
“This research confirms what we are seeing in the field,” said Rob Soderbery, senior vice president of Symantec’s
Storage and Availability Management Group. “Attention has turned to initiatives that will drive immediate cost
reduction, rather than longer term ROI driven programs. Storage has been a primary focus of these initiatives as
the demand for capacity continues to rise, despite economic challenges.”
Doing More for Less
Of those surveyed, 75 percent reported user expectations are rising gradually or rapidly. Furthermore, 60 percent of
the respondents saw meeting the service levels demanded by the organization to be more difficult or much more
difficult to meet. Only 10 percent saw service levels to be easier to meet.
Nonetheless, when asked to identify their key objectives for the year, reducing costs was by far the most frequently
mentioned goal. In fact, reducing costs was mentioned by more companies than the next two objectives combined
(improving service levels and improving responsiveness).
The key initiatives data centers are pursuing to “do more with less” include automation of routine tasks (mentioned
by 42 percent of respondents), cross-training staff (40 percent) and reducing data center complexity (35 percent).
Staffing Remains a Big Issue
According to the study, staffing remains a crucial issue with 36 percent reporting that they are understaffed while
only 4 percent reported being overstaffed. Furthermore, 43 percent say finding qualified applicants is a big or huge
problem.
To address the staffing issue companies are leaning on outsourcing and training. Nearly half (45 percent) outsource
primarily to give data center staff more time to focus on other tasks. The top three leading IT functions that businesses
are outsourcing include business continuity (46 percent), backups (43 percent) and storage management (39 percent).
Training is seen as strategic by 68 percent of the respondents, with 78 percent expecting training budgets to rise or
stay constant over the next two years.
Servers and Storage Remain Underutilized
Companies in 2008 reported that their data center servers were operating at just 53 percent of capacity. Data
center storage utilization was even lower at 50 percent. Not surprisingly Symantec found a flurry of activity aimed
at increasing utilization in both areas.
The major server-related initiatives include server consolidation (80 percent) and server virtualization (77 percent).
For storage the leading initiatives were storage virtualization (76 percent), continuous data protection (71 percent)
and storage resource management (71 percent).
Disaster Recovery Lags Behind
Data center management continues to report room for improvement in the area of disaster recovery. In fact, just
35 percent report their disaster recovery plan is above average, while 27 percent say it needs work and 9 percent
report their plan is informal or undocumented. Companies still find that human error is the biggest cause of unplanned
downtime, being the culprit 25 percent of the time. Hardware/software failure and power outages follow closely
behind.
Green Data Center Driven by Cost
Continuing the trend first spotted in 2007, the data center’s focus on “being green” was driven by cost issues in 2008
with social responsibility on the rise. The study asked companies why creating a Green Data Center was important
to their workplace. Reducing electricity consumption was mentioned by 54 percent, followed by reducing cooling
costs (51 percent) and a sense of responsibility to the community (42 percent).
Report Underscores Need for Solutions
This year’s study shows the continuing importance for companies to control data center complexity and costs. With
the mandate to literally do more with less, companies are scrambling to find solutions that have an immediate effect
on cost and efficiency.
“IT managers and executives are in a tough spot,” said Soderbery. “Cost reduction is a non-negotiable objective this
year, while user expectations remain high and demand continues to rise. We are seeing this translate into interest
in solutions that provide customers with confidence and deliver immediate benefits in reducing server and storage
spend without disrupting today’s environment.”
About Symantec’s State of the Data Center Research
Symantec’s second annual State of the Data Center report is the result of a survey conducted in September and
October of 2008 by Applied Research. The study targeted 1,600 data center managers in Global 5000 and large
public sector institutions located in 21 countries.

Symantec Announces New Versions of Veritas Storage Foundation and
High Availability Solutions for Windows
Introduces support for Windows Server 2008, increased operational effectiveness, enhanced user experience
CUPERTINO, Calif. – March 18, 2008 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Veritas Storage
Foundation and Veritas Cluster Server 5.1 for Windows, the industry leading heterogeneous storage management
and high availability solution providing data and application availability for Windows environments. A key component
of the Symantec Solutions for Windows portfolio scheduled to be available in June 2008, Veritas Storage
Foundation 5.1 High Availability for Windows introduces support for Windows Server 2008 and delivers significant
improvements to operational effectiveness and ease of use including enhanced availability and disaster recovery,
centralized storage visibility and SmartMove for efficient array migrations.
“Customers today face overwhelming demands in managing disparate islands of storage and meeting strict service
level agreements for high availability,” said Aaron Aubrecht, senior director of product management, Symantec.
“Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows and Veritas Cluster Server provide organizations with a common set of
easy-to-use tools that work across virtually every server and storage platform to provide online volume management,
storage and application availability, application integrated quick recovery and storage area network path
management. Enabling IT organizations to use a single software solution to manage their storage infrastructure
and recover applications in the event of a local failure or disaster can significantly reduce both capital and
operational costs, while simultaneously ensuring confidence that existing service level agreements are met.”
Expanded Operating System, Application and Storage Support
Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows and Veritas Cluster Server are extending support for Windows Server
2008 and Windows Server 2008 Server Core environments, with support for Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter
versions across x86, x64, and IA64 platforms. Additionally, this release provides expanded support for Windows
Vista, Microsoft Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1, Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2007, Symantec Enterprise
Vault 2007 and Blackberry Enterprise Server.
Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows Dynamic Multi-pathing continues to enhance support for leading storage
platforms– enabling customers to have a single multi-pathing solution without compromising a heterogeneous tiered
storage infrastructure. In addition to the 40+ array families already supported –support for Pillar, 3PAR, and newer
IBM and HDS arrays has been added.
Enhanced Availability and Recoverability
Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows offers a guided, step-by-step, wizard to ensure Microsoft Exchange and
other applications can be quickly recovered from a point-in-time volume copy. IT organizations can now simplify the
storage management complexity of recovering consistent Exchange data to an alternate location with this new
capability– automated snapshot recovery to Exchange Recovery Storage Groups. Moreover, for organizations
requiring a multi-site disaster recovery infrastructure for Exchange or other applications, Veritas Cluster Server
has added support for EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF)/STAR.
Improved Operations, Management, and Performance
Providing visibility across multiple hosts from a single, secure, web-based console can significantly reduce
operational costs and risks to application downtime. Veritas Storage Foundation Manager will support Veritas
Storage Foundation for Windows and up to 3,000 hosts enabling organizations to gain insight into storage objects
including volumes, storage subsystems, and storage area network paths. Complementing the storage infrastructure
visibility, Veritas Cluster Server Management Console has been enhanced to dynamically discover physical and
virtual (e.g., VMware) clusters across Unix, Linux and Windows in a single global operation, and dramatically simplify
operations. For example, clustered applications can be easily identified by geographical site or business unit,
thereby making it easier to manage, act and report on the logical groups of Veritas Cluster Server deployments.
Configuration Checker mitigates risk to application downtime by providing a simple and powerful way for organizations
to proactively and easily identify configuration-related installation errors, departures from best practices, and
incompatible hardware and/or software. SmartMove is a new feature in Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 for Windows
that greatly enhances the efficiency of data-intensive operations by analyzing the data and ensuring that only the
necessary blocks of data are moved. This significantly enhances the efficiency of data movement operations, such
as creating or synchronizing mirrors or snapshots.

Symantec Launches Norton Smartphone Security
Cupertine, CA - Nov. 20, 2007 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the launch of Norton
Smartphone Security, the first consumer mobile security offering to provide a solution for both the Windows
Mobile and Symbian OS - in one product. This new product features best-in-class Norton AntiVirus technology
as well as a firewall and antispam for SMS (Short Message Service). Symantec designed Norton Smartphone
Security to provide mobile users the same level of security that has become standard for laptops and other
computing devices.
"Smartphones are expanding consumer freedom to communicate and access important information anytime,
anywhere," said Rowan Trollope, senior vice president, Consumer Business Unit, Symantec. "However,
unsecure public WiFi or network connections can put users at risk. In addition, Web and e-mail viruses can
directly infect smartphones, enabling hackers to remotely control the device, access sensitive information or
disable applications. Norton Smartphone Security runs discreetly in the background, providing the confidence
and peace of mind to engage in everyday activities like e-mailing, Web browsing or banking online from these
handheld devices."
In a U.S. survey of smartphone users conducted by Applied Research, 34 percent of respondents said they
access their bank accounts via their mobile device and 54 percent of respondents said they access Web sites
that require a password. As more users transact using their mobile devices, the financial incentives for virus
writers and mobile hackers will follow. Norton Smartphone Security gives consumers the tools to safeguard
against the latest mobile threats. Additionally, Gartner, Inc. estimates that by 2008, smartphones will overtake
laptops in volume on a worldwide basis*. With increasing adoption rates, cybercriminals will be motivated to shift
their attention and take advantage of smartphone vulnerabilities.
Product Features
Norton Smartphone Security provides comprehensive security, including:
- Antivirus - Protects users from viruses by detecting mobile threats and preventing users from accessing
infected files;
- Antispam for SMS - Automatically deletes spam messages, or filters them to a separate spam folder;
- Firewall - Controls both inbound and outbound network traffic on the mobile device;
- Platform Compatibility - Supports devices running either Windows Mobile 5 or 6 as well as Symbian 9
smartphones from one product.
Availability and Pricing
Norton Smartphone Security is a subscription-based offering available now for purchase through the Symantec
online store at www.symantecstore.com. Additionally, it will soon be available at various retail locations and online
retailers at a suggested retail price of US$29.99.

Symantec to Extend its Leadership in Information-Centric Security
Proposed Vontu Acquisition and Data Loss Prevention to Play a Central Role in Symantec’s Security 2.0 Vision
and Strategy for Information Risk Management
CUPERTINO, Calif. – Nov. 5, 2007 – Taking another step forward in its vision for Security 2.0, Symantec Corp.
(Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced its intent to acquire Vontu and its plans to integrate Vontu’s Data Loss
Prevention solutions into Symantec’s broader portfolio. Combining Symantec’s market-leading security and
storage capabilities with Vontu’s market-leading DLP technologies will create the most comprehensive Information
Risk Management solution on the market.
The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth calendar quarter of 2007, subject to receiving regulatory
approvals and satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.
“As part of our Security 2.0 vision, we have long been pushing a view that security should be driven by policy,
focused on information and supported by a managed infrastructure,” said Tom Kendra, group president, Security
and Data Management Group, Symantec. “Through internal innovation and acquisition we have solutions to help
companies define and implement policies, manage and protect information, and secure and manage their systems
and devices. Vontu’s offerings provide insight into the information itself, the context in which it’s being used and
the controls needed to prevent its loss.”
With data breaches becoming more frequent, costly and regulated, it’s no surprise that data loss prevention is top
of mind for IT and business leaders. A September Goldman Sachs Security Spending Survey indicates more than
50 percent of CISOs believe data leakage to be a top driver of their organization’s security spending. IDC
estimates the Information Protection and Control market to reach $3.2 billion by 2011, representing a 33 percent
compound annual growth rate¹.
A Comprehensive Portfolio for Information Risk Management
Information Risk Management combines threat protection and information control into an integrated set of products,
enabling organizations to keep the bad things out (information security), to keep the important things in (data loss
prevention), and to manage, retain and find that information when needed (e-discovery).
The ability to manage these different challenges requires a level of expertise in security and storage that
Symantec is uniquely positioned to provide. Symantec already provides a set of products and services that
enable companies to:
Identify their areas of information risk and define the policies to mitigate those risks.
Implement, automate and monitor controls around those policies.
Reduce the risk of malware and spam from entering an organization.
Protect the systems and devices where information lives, including servers, databases, storage systems, laptops
and smartphones.
Securely control access to networks and enforce endpoint security policies.
Protect and manage information in message archives and data centers.
Provide a real-time mechanism to aggregate, correlate and analyze behaviors.
Conduct post-breach forensics to determine what information was lost.
DLP: A Core Component of Information Risk Management
Vontu’s products will complement Symantec’s existing portfolio with a comprehensive platform to prevent the
loss of confidential data wherever it is stored or used - across endpoint, network and storage systems.
Endpoint: Vontu Endpoint solutions allow companies to prevent confidential data from being copied to USB
drives, burned to CD/DVDs, and downloaded to local drives, as well as discover and protect confidential data
stored on laptops and desktops.
Network: Vontu Network Monitoring and Prevention solutions stop confidential data from being sent outside the
organization via email, webmail, FTP, IM and other Internet protocols to help organizations ensure compliance
with data security and privacy policies.
Storage: Vontu Data Discovery and Protection solutions help organizations understand where confidential
information is stored and quickly find and fix exposed data on file servers, databases, document management
systems, laptops and desktops. Vontu's proven solutions also help companies address PCI compliance, e-Discovery,
data classification and data governance objectives.
Policy Management: Vontu offers a centralized platform for policy management, detection, workflow and remediation
that enables organizations to define policies once and enforce them everywhere.
Layering Data Loss Prevention across the Symantec Portfolio
Following the close of the acquisition, Symantec plans to layer Vontu’s DLP technologies across Symantec’s
existing endpoint security, network security, storage and compliance solutions creating the most comprehensive
solution for Information Risk Management. Unlike point products that only cover the endpoint or the network, this
multi-layered solution will provide customers with a comprehensive way to dramatically reduce the risk of data loss.
Following the close of the acquisition, the Vontu team will operate as dedicated team within Symantec’s Security
and Data Management Group, continuing to build on the Vontu DLP 8 product suite. Vontu DLP 8 is the industry’s
first integrated solution that combines endpoint and network-based technology to discover and protect data
wherever it is stored, as well as monitor and prevent inappropriate data usage.

Symantec to Simplify Compliance Management with New Control
Compliance Suite
Symantec Will Be First to Provide One Solution for Policy Management, Technical Configurations Assessment
and Response Assessment
CUPERTINO, Calif. – May 14, 2007 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced an updated Symantec
Control Compliance Suite, designed to reduce the cost and complexity of IT policy management and compliance
by automating the assessment of policies against industry regulations, standards and best practices. Scheduled
to be available this month, Symantec Control Compliance Suite positions Symantec as the only vendor to offer
integrated policy management, automated technical configurations and procedural response assessments in
one product, ensuring more repeatable and effective compliance processes.
“Organizations today are required to demonstrate compliance with the various industry regulations, mandates
and standards,” said Vivian Tero, Senior Research Analyst, IDC. “Solutions like Symantec Control Compliance
Suite help IT executives unify the assessment and management of both programmatic and procedural IT
controls to effectively lower the administrative cost and complexity of corporate compliance programs.”
Ongoing research by the IT Policy Compliance Group (www.itpolicycompliance.com) demonstrates a clear
linkage between business and financial risks and practices implemented in IT. The majority of costs associated
with improving IT compliance comes from frequently repeating time-consuming processes. These manual
processes include creating, defining and distributing policies, tracking exceptions, managing standards and
entitlements, remediating deviations, and performing both procedural and technical assessments. The IT Policy
Compliance Group’s research reveals companies that invest in one-off solutions to manage these processes will
spend significantly more on IT policy compliance than those leveraging a single solution that can manage multiple
standards, frameworks and regulations.
Due to the multiple mandates, regulations and standards that impact multiple business units at any given
company, many companies increase compliance costs by implementing redundant controls to address each
one though many include the same requirements. Symantec Control Compliance Suite provides key elements
of the IT governance, risk and compliance management process by helping to ensure coverage of external
mandates by automating policy documentation and dissemination, acceptance tracking and exception
management. It also demonstrates compliance to internal and external policies by automating the assessment
of technical and procedural controls and evaluating this against risk criteria.
Compliance evidence can be gathered on configurations, permissions, patches, vulnerabilities and the solution
controls self assessment of procedural activities without relying on agents. Finally, Symantec Control Compliance
Suite helps fix deviations to standards, enabling immediate corrective actions or triggers to third-party response
workflow systems.
Symantec Control Compliance Suite provides these capabilities by leveraging four new modules:
-Policy Module – enhanced module enables customers to define and disseminate policies, show coverage of
regulatory requirements and demonstrate compliance to policies in one solution.
-Standards Module – enhanced module automates the detection and remediation of deviations from technical
standards, and provides pre-packaged technical standards that define best practices for securing workstations,
servers and databases.
-Entitlement Module – new module gathers permissions for data access across the entire company and translates
those permissions into a consistent, easy-to-understand format. It associates management classification to the
data, and electronically routes the information to business owners for access approval. Entitlements approvals
are tracked and made available for audit reports.
-Response Assessment Module – new module automates the assessment of non-programmatic controls by
providing out-of-the-box content for popular standards and frameworks. Customers are able to manage the
manual assessment process from creating and distributing questionnaires to analyzing response data. These

“Organizations are not just struggling with maintaining strong IT compliance, but also understanding what policies
and standards they should implement to achieve it,” said Arshad Matin, vice president, Compliance and Security
Management, Symantec. “A typical organization is a complex, heterogeneous environment, with a variety of
platforms and a diverse set of control objectives. Understanding requirements and how to achieve strong IT
compliance requires comprehensive intelligence of regulations, frameworks and the relevant best practices.
Symantec is helping customers lower their risk of non-compliance and improve internal controls through a
combination of automation, process improvement and training.”
Additionally, Symantec Consulting Services will provide advisory and operations services support to
complement the features of Control Compliance Suite. Symantec Consulting Services can help an organization
interpret, evaluate, and validate its compliance with regulatory industry standards and its own internal best
practices and procedures.
